Course planning
Consult your academic advisor and instructors in advance to confirm your courses can be completed remotely.
Ensure your travel timeline does not interfere with exams or course requirements.
University employment
If employed, reach out to your supervisor or department before the trip to discuss how or if work duties can continue during travel.
IT access while abroad
The virtual private network (VPN) is unnecessary for common services like email and OneDrive.
VPN is only required for specific systems with enhanced security.
Reach out to your local IT support or the Help Desk if VPN access is needed based on your role.
For faculty and staff
Step 1: Talk to your unit
Discuss travel plans with your supervisor and unit human resources representative.
If you will be working remotely abroad, a Temporary Overseas Remote Work Arrangement (TORWA) may be required. Learn about TORWA requirements.
Step 2: Research travel
If your international travel includes research or collaboration, coordinate and discuss working plans with the Research Integrity Office in the Office of the Vice President for Research before departure. Email: OVPR-RIO@uiowa.edu
Step 3: Understand VPN use
VPN is not required for standard access like email or OneDrive.
VPN is required only for systems with elevated security needs. Work with your local IT to determine compliance scope.
Step 4: Request VPN access if needed
Coordinate with your local IT support/ Help Desk to prepare your devices ahead of travel.
VPN connections are blocked from non-US locations, email it-security@uiowa.edu to request a link to the exception request form.
Final reminders
Keep your devices updated and secure before and during travel.
Always Use Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
Avoid using public or shared computers to access institutional systems.
